What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the natural transition that occurs before menopause. During perimenopause, a woman’s ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and do not release an egg during every menstrual cycle. The transition is characterized by irregular periods and shifting hormone levels, which can produce bothersome and often distressing symptoms.

While women can’t get pregnant once they’re postmenopausal, they can during the perimenopausal period.

What are the symptoms of perimenopause?

Perimenopause can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Unpredictable menstrual cycles
  • Menstrual changes (e.g., heavy bleeding, worsening PMS)
  • Mood changes
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Decreased libido
  • Vaginal changes
  • Sleep challenges

When does perimenopause occur?

Perimenopause begins several years before menopause, often starting in the mid-40s, although it can start earlier. The average length of perimenopause is around four years, but for many women, the transition can be much longer.

How do I know if I am perimenopausal?

A medical provider experienced in the treatment of perimenopause symptoms, like Rebecca Fredman, CNP, will use a variety of factors to determine your menopausal status, including a detailed history of your symptoms and lab work to check hormone levels and rule out other medical conditions.
