Bioidentical hormone pellet therapy is a way to replace or regulate hormones - typically testosterone, estrogen, or both - using small pellets that are implanted under the skin. Pellets are made from plant derived hormones that are similar to hormones produced naturally in the body.
Pellets can be used in the same way as other medications for hormone replacement therapy to relieve symptoms associated with menopause or perimenopause. Many patients find that pellets are particularly helpful in relieving symptoms such as:
Pellets are implanted under the skin, which allows for direct absorption into the bloodstream. In this way, pellets are very efficient for the delivery of hormonal medication. Pellets also allow for the continuous availability of hormones, which the body can absorb as needed.
Pellets typically last for 3 to 4 months, which makes them ideal for people who do not wish to use daily or weekly medications. They also eliminate the need for creams, patches, gels, and other forms of hormonal medication that can be messy or irritating.
To insert hormone pellets, a qualified medical provider will administer numbing medication at the site of the insertion, which is usually in the hip. After the site is tested for numbness, the provider will make a small incision and use sterile instruments to place one or more pellets.
After the procedure, the incision is closed with Steri-Strips or, in rare cases, a suture. The Steri-Strips will stay in place for several days. Patients are provided with detailed aftercare instructions.
If you have tried other types of hormone replacement therapy and feel that your symptoms have not been sufficiently addressed, pellets may be an excellent option.
